Owl Kindle Cover and Pouch

I make a lot of custom e-reader covers since offering that option in my shop on Etsy. A couple of months ago, a lovely customer named Lindsey requested a custom Kindle cover with an owl print from the Critter Community collection. I ordered the fabric, got to work and promptly finished that order.

However, my 3-month-old sewing machine decided it was time to have a tantrum and scratched the top cover fabric, on the very last step of assembling the project. Gah!! The resulting cover did not meet my quality standards and I communicated to Lindsey that I would re-do it.

She was so patient -- through all my sewing machine troubles (I had to exchange the lemon for a new one!), re-ordering fabric and re-making the order (by that point, competing with other due custom orders)-- that I decided to make her a little complementary zipper pouch with the leftover fabric, as a little "thank you" gift. It turned out so cute and I hope she's enjoying her set!

A Desk Pad For Paavani

My friend Paavani from graduate school many years ago contacted me to make a custom cloth pad for an antique desk. This desk belongs to her friend's father and she wanted to protect the top of this special piece of furniture while using it to work and write. She requested Marimekko fabric and red or a coordinating color -- since her studio has one red wall and a red rug.

It was such fun to browse the Marimekko website and work with Paavani to select a print. We agreed on this one, and I picked a complementary violet color for the binding. The desk pad is lined with 2 layers of white flannel so the pad is both soft and thinner than a quilted version -- to allow for writing.

I loved working with this bold design and seeing the final result. Paavani was so sweet and sent me photos of the cloth pad at home on the desk.

Artwork for Ann

Hello there!

It's been quite some time since I've posted an update. I've been busy behind the scenes, working on custom orders and developing some new houseware designs -- pillow covers and more table runners among other things. I should hopefully have a shop update SOON. The weather has been so nice lately, it's hard to justify spending time at the sewing machine and computer when everyone is itching to go run around outside!

One of the latest custom orders I created was a piece of burlap art. Alli contacted me to make something commemorating the death of her friend Ann's sister a year ago. She wanted something symbolic but subtle.

Inspired by all the trees in bloom around me, I suggested a tree covered in pink blossoms with a bird flying off into the heavens. The blossoms evoke Spring and rebirth, the bird is angelic and free. Alli approved and I got to work!

The piece is created with a background of upcycled coffee sack with some bold printing. The tree is a textured natural linen and I stitched felt dots and tiny leaves with French knots. The bird is made of plain white fabric and embroidered for dimension in the wings.

I love how this piece turned out. It was quite emotional to make. I find it hard to divest myself from the subject matter -- whether it's happy like a celebratory anniversary piece, or sad like a commemorative piece such as this one. Alli said Ann really liked it, which was a relief.
